Hundreds dropped off common chemicals at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection in Pittsburgh Saturday.

The Pennsylvania Resources Council’s Zero Waste Pittsburgh Project collected several items, including cleaners, paints, car batteries and pesticides.

“This is a very responsible way of disposing of potentially hazardous materials,” said Michael Stepaniak, the program coordinator at PRC. “We work with a licensed contractor and all materials are packaged responsibly rather than being dumped in the storm sewer or buried or burned or creatively placed in the trash.”

Nearly 700 households got rid of chemical products at a site on Second Avenue downtown.
